N.J. school superintendent charged with DUI, court documents show

The superintendent of Stafford Township schools was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and careless driving related to an alleged incident last month, according to court documents and a media report.
George J. Chidiac was discovered by an off-duty police officer in Berkeley Township in Ocean County walking away from the scene of a crash after the car he was allegedly driving hit a utility pole, according to the Asbury Park Press, which cited a Berkeley Township Police report.
Police responded to the scene of the crash near Chelsea Drive and Mill Creek Road after midnight on Oct. 27.
An off-duty police officer reported seeing a man walking away from the crash scene toward Mill Creek Park and officers found Chidiac by the park, where he told them he walked to get help, the Asbury Park Press reported.
The police report stated the crash happened less than a mile from Chidiac’s Cove Road home after he left the Stonefire Bar and Grill in Beachwood, the Press reported. Chidiac was arrested after he allegedly failed a field sobriety test and failed to answer questions in complete sentences.
Neither Chidiac nor his attorney immediately returned requests for comment Saturday.
Stafford Township Board of Education president Tammy Wagner and vice president Kevin Cooney also did not immediately return requests for comment Saturday.
Berkeley Township police did not respond to a request for information about the case.
Chidiac’s Berkeley Township municipal court hearing on the charges is scheduled to occur via video on Dec. 16 at 11 a.m.
